Nothing To Do With Islam

Karen Armstrong in the Guardian:

People do not robotically obey every single edict of their sacred texts. If they did, the world would be full of Christians who love their enemies and turn the other cheek when attacked. There are political reasons why a tiny minority of Muslims are turning to terrorism, which have nothing to do with Islam. But because of the way people read their scriptures these days, once a terrorist has decided to blow up a London bus, he can probably find scriptural texts that seem to endorse his action.

Right….the reasons why all these people turn to terrorism have nothing to do with Islam. There are, it seems, compelling political reasons for blowing people up in buses. Or tube trains. Or cafes, or clubs. Or for flying aircraft into tall buildings. These compelling reasons, by chance, only happen to apply to Muslims. And once they’ve decided to commit mass murder, they then look up the scriptural text for the justification.

And, from the author of “Islam: A Short History“, and, according to Amazon, “one of the world’s foremost commentators on religious affairs”, there’s no need, in an article about sacred texts, to point out that the Koran in Arabic is, unlike the Bible, believed to be the literal word of Allah.

It would be naive, I think, if one were form a view of the Muslim relationship with Islamic scripture, to base that view on the accounts of Muslims; that is to say, why ask some brown guy when you’ve got Karen Armstrong, who probably went to a better college than you did, and almost certainly went to a better college than the brown guy did? It stands to reason, after all. But this bit at Fjordman may at least be entertaining:

(God only knows how reliable his sources are, of course. Oh, and speaking of God…)
There are actually people who think the whole Bible is the literal word of God (God, not Allah — but I don’t think that’s the difference you meant), at least the KJV. James I’s translators prayed like gangbusters for accuracy, and some folks think it worked. The same crowd believe that the original Hebrew and Aramaic are the literal word of God, too, of course. But learning dead languages is a huge hassle. Monolingual Americans, you know. Pfft.

If only it was so simple! What came first the chicken or the egg? Clearly Karen Armstrong would argue it was the egg.
Well this morning I woke up and found myself angry with my wife, I checked the Old Testament, the Bible, the Bhagavad Gita and the Qu’ran.
It was a close run as to which one gave me the most authority to assert myself on my wife. So I just picked one and gave her a slap!
