   Note that the OIC, the chief international organisation of Islamic countries has 57 members. Even if we remove Palestine, that still leaves 56. And I believe — at least last time I checked — that some of those countries are democracies.

   Chris must be a Guardian reader, then. The Burchill definition of “all” is “the ones I want to include,” it seems. Why she writes a “calculated affront to the massed ranks of Guardian readers” in the Times is anyone’s guess, although the dig at those who believe that “women should not have rights, the working class need to be kept firmly in their place” might be a kick in the shins to the Thunderer’s audience, though I think even they are more progressive than that. (If I say that’s a “straw man”, will she call me “a sexist pig”?) Did anyone ever believe that “because of Lynndie England and her friends, women etc”? I thinks she’s having some sort of private dialogue with Adam Yoshida.
   Nice to know that Julie thinks that they all sang happy songs in the Russian concentration camps. I don’t think a great deal changed on the wrong side of the Iron Curtain after Berlin fell. If the Red Army had swept all the way to France, it would have invalidated WWII, no doubt about it.

   Mick, I know it was you. As for being happy away from the Guardian, she was a columnist; she didn’t have to clock in every morning. She could write her spiels from the Groucho with a bottle of voddie and a laptop, and never go into the office. I didn’t read her in the Grauniad — when you’ve read one well-turned insult, you’ve read ’em all, and she never used facts or any of that flabby journalistic stuff; she never grew out of the NME — but I gather through Norm Geras that she wrote a penultimate farewell column damning their sandals and beards, and then a final farewell column on how nice they’d all been and how it was only the lucre that lured her away, and she’d think of them every day. It’s tough having to write 800 words a week, I can tell you.
