the tragedy on the A46 in south Warwickshire at about 3.20am.

A police spokesman said the accident happened between Bidford-on-Avon and Alcester as the cyclist was heading towards Alcester.

“He was struck from the rear by a motor vehicle,” the spokesman said. “The vehicle did not stop and the pedal cyclist died at the scene.

“Police have reason to believe that a cream-coloured Iveco box-type vehicle was involved. This vehicle will have sustained nearside damage.”

There was a police notice in Drayton Park (by the Arsenal ground) last week appealing for witnesses to a fatal road accident, involving “a collision between a cyclist and a tipper lorry”. A collision? Well that’s one way of putting it. No prizes for guessing which was the fatality.

What the hell was a cyclist doing on a highway at 3 in the morning?!(don’t even say “Riding his bike…”) From our local experience with cyclists, I’m going to hazard a guess that he wasn’t wearing a reflective vest and/or didn’t have lights and reflectors on the bike; some of those bozos have definite ‘death wishes’.

You could well be right. To be honest, I’d skimmed over the a.m. bit and assumed it was mid-afternoon. In the early hours of the morning does make a difference. I still hate white van drivers though.

Let me check my Highway Code …
Ah yes, right here, “when involved in an accident between 1am and 8am it is okay to drive off and not report it leaving the other party to die by the roadside with no chance of medical attention, such cases are the fault of the bozo cyclist”.
There you go, it does make a difference, of course it does.
