So it has ever been for Israel

Jerry Coyne on the UN genocide charge:

I’m wondering what these critics would have Israel do. Withdraw and allow Hamas to keep running Gaza? It’s curious that we don’t hear them saying what is clearly true: Hamas and other terrorist groups are bent on genocide of the Jews, as they have written and repeatedly stated. As everyone knows, if Israel was really intent on wiping out Palestinians, it would withdraw its soldiers and simply bomb the territory to smithereens. They are not doing that, but sending in IDF soldiers, many of whom have been killed. And they warn civilians of strikes in advance as well as telling them where to go for safety, though things are chaotic in Gaza with this assault.  The critics don’t know from genocide. But it’s true that Israel is losing the public relations war, as another article in the WSJ asserts: it’s “winning the war but losing the world.” And so it has ever been for Israel.

Yep.

What a ridiculous thing to say! No, not even the present Israeli government, in the grip of religious extremists, would do that. They are not out to exterminate two million people, they just want to make Gaza uninhabitable, so many Palestinians would want to, or have to, move elsewhere, and Donald Trump can have his Riviera. Simples!

Of course they wouldn’t do that – bombing Gaza to smithereens – because they’re not pursuing a genocide against the Palestinians. You think that they want to drive the Palestinians out to make way for a Trump-style riviera. I think that after twenty or so years of Hamas next door doing nothing but building tunnels and storing weapons for the sole purpose of killing Jews and destroying Israel, the Israelis have finally – after October 7th – had enough. It can’t go on. Hamas needs to be destroyed. Either way it’s nasty, and people are suffering and getting killed…but it’s not a genocide.

For context, beneath a territory no more than seven miles wide and 25 miles long, hamas built over 400 miles of concrete reinforced tunnels, with electrity, air purification systems, blast doors, booby traps, descending in some places 200 feet, and passing directly below around half of all buildings in gaza. Above ground Hamas rigged nearly 40% of all buildings in gaza to explode.
