Force-Fed Salt

medical evidence which said the high salt levels were natural.

Prosecutors at Nottingham Crown Court had claimed the couple had force-fed salt to the boy as a form of punishment.

But the pair’s defence team argued a rare medical condition caused Christian’s body to store toxic levels of salt.

Two years ago the couple were jailed for five years after being convicted of manslaughter.

They served 15 months of that sentence before a retrial was ordered in April last year and the couple were released on bail.

Some background to the case here. Afficionados of dodgy prosecutions of supposed child killers will be unsurprised to find the figure of Sir Roy Meadow lurking in the shadows.

So can they go ahead with the adoption?

Hmmmm. A difficult case, certainly, but if you also read at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/hereford/worcs/6409209.stm just HOW rare this medical condition is (i.e. three documented cases in the world), I’m not sure how much one can criticize the decision to prosecute. Or do we just give the green light to any would-be infanticide with the nous to mimic a medical condition, however rare it may be?

But, but, but, Grumpy. I read something that said that the child’s head injury happened after he was admitted to hospital.
