There really isn’t any mystery here. The Presidential Elections are coming up in France and Le Pen is expected to do better than last time. The French Establishment and press are desperate to find a way to discredit him. This offered a golden opportunity to pin something nasty on him. As you say, the truth is that anti-semitism is where the French far right and middling-to-far left meet.
