Free from Prejudice and Discrimination

Alan Johnson, the Education Secretary, will apparently announce today that he plans to make faith schools take a quarter of their intake from non-faith backgrounds:

In remarks likely to alarm supporters of faith schools, Mr Johnson will say in his speech: “Young minds are free from prejudice and discrimination, so schools are in a unique position to prevent social division. Schools should cross ethnic and religious boundaries, and certainly not increase them, or exacerbate difficulties in sensitive areas.”

Well said. In which case, why is the government supporting faith schools at all?

I see the point, and I sympathize with their aims, but it’s still tyrannical. Also idiotic: One out of every four students in every British madrassa will now be Anglican, Hindu, or maybe Jewish. Yeah, that’ll straighten everything right out. If only my parents had chased the damn nuns away and sent me to memorize the Koran five days a week, racism in the US would be a fading memory by now. Umm… hm.
Are they supporting non-faith schools? If not, support neither. If so, support both.

    P. Froward; exactly. It’s certainly been the case, here in Canada, that Catholic schools have accepted non-Catholics as students, the incentive from the parents’ pov being that their kids were, in theory, getting a better education. Heh..I can just see the New Agers lining up to get their kids into Jewish schools in the expectation that they’ll be learning Kaballah…

Wait’ll they find out that first they’ve gotta learn Hebrew! 🙂
