Progressive Elements

Ken speaks out:

London Mayor Ken Livingstone said he would like Muslims to give up the veil.

But he suggested change was not something that could be imposed from outside the Muslim community.

He told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “Getting Muslim women to give up the veil – which I suspect is something most people would like to see in the long term, including myself – is not going to be done by old white male politicians telling them to do it.

“It will be change from within. That is why it’s important we should engage with the progressive elements and leaders in the Muslim community.”

Like, um, support-suicide-bombers, kill-homosexuals, beat-wives-as-long-as-the-marks-don’t-show Sheikh Qarawadi?

It’s a nice vague expression ‘engage with X’. I suppose it could mean ‘argue strongly against X’, but it could also mean ‘slap X on the back and say “jolly good”‘. I think it’s mean likely to mean the latter than the former when Ken is engaging with islamists.

    Sheikh Livingstwati.

I am not aware that Jack Straw did anything more than offer his own personal reactions to the veil. Did he in fact offer any policy suggestion? Leading to government action? etc

Exactly David, the way the Straw comments have been taken up and twisted has been ridiculous – Galloway (of course) doing it again today. And Livingstone really has some cheek – engaging with muslim reactionaries when he could have been, usefully, engaging with muslim progressives.

“…is not going to be done by old white male politicians telling them to do it.”
Yeah, who ever heard of Muslims listening to old men?
The poor clown has his platitudes mixed up.
