Most Uptight

for reasons best known to themselves, merge much sooner than they need to. Why do they do that? Worried that they won’t be able to merge later on? You can always force your way in, unless you’re dealing with a complete loon who’ll refuse eye contact and stay one foot behind the car in front. The thing is, if you do merge early on, you’re inevitably going to see other cars whipping past you. If that bothers you, join them. How sad is it when drivers merge sooner than they need to, only to sit there fuming about how unfair it is when others don’t do the same?

Be daring. Don’t just sit there getting uptight.

So your one of THOSE people, are you? I may never read your blog again.
“The majority of the other cars, for reasons best known to themselves, merge much sooner than they need to.” You only have the room in front of you because they merged before you. You’re taking advantage of them. Don’t try that in the states. Road rage is protected under the second amendment.
The proper way to handle this is to “zip up” — one on the left, one on the right, and so on. It even says that in the driver’s manual.
Let me ask you this — If you are at the end of a queue of cars that have stopped behind a stalled car, do you pass before the others, all the while thinking, “for reasons best known to themselves these fools are waiting longing than they need to. Why do they do that?” I hate those people too.

yds…200 yds. Cars in your lane start moving over as soon as they see the signs. The nearer you get, the more they do it. Why? Why not wait till the merge point, when you can “zip up” as you put it? So your lane empties, and you can go right up to the merge point, overtaking all those cars that have merged before you. I don’t see what’s wrong with that, or why people should find it annoying. Well OK, I do see why they find it annoying: it’s because they merged before they needed to, and so lose out.
I mean, when’s the right time to merge, by your reckoning? At 400 yds, so you lose out to the people who merge at 300 yds? At 300 yds, so you lose out to the people who merge at 200 yds? The sensible thing to do is clearly for everyone to stay in lane till just before the merge point, then zip up. What’s the problem with that?
