Germany 0 – Italy 2

the talk about the Germans being united behind their team, and everyone having a warm fuzzy good-to-be-German feeling, with street festivals and dancing and all-round flag-waving and celebration. Plus they have been playing some positive football. The Italians, on the other hand: always negative, in the middle of a scandal back home – what’s to like?

I couldn’t do it though. After five minutes I knew who I wanted to win, and it wasn’t the Germans.

A special thank you to Benito Archundia Tellez, the ref. What a game he had! It’s always the same: at the start of every tournament, of every season, the authorities lay down the law about how they’re going to tighten up on this that or the other, and the poor referees go along with it for a while, like the unfortunate Valentin Ivanov, but it just makes things worse. Eventually sense prevails, and the good referees, like Senor Tellez, use their judgement and let the game flow.

One of the great World Cup matches.

I usually root against the Italians because of their constant diving and complaining. But the goals were brilliant and it was certainly a relief not to have another game decided by PKs. Still hope they lose the final, though.

The old definition of a gentleman was someone who can play the accordion, but doesn’t. Now I see that an Italian is someone who can play wonderful football, but usually chooses not to. Thank goodness they changed their minds last night.
