So Farewell Then…

Well, it’s an all-European last four, and England’s not included. Somehow, writing five hours after the penalty shoot-out debacle, I’m coming round to seeing that fact as something of a relief. Now I can sit back and enjoy some great football without the constant disappointment of seeing my team – full of great players – consistently under-perform. We’ve been poor right through the tournament, and all that belief that somehow we’d come good when it mattered – well, we didn’t. Portugal were lacklustre, and we were just that bit worse – though I’d have to single out Owen Hargreaves for praise: he was all over the place, and entirely appropriately was the only one (of four!) who managed to score in the shoot-out. Watching the Brazil-France game afterwards was like watching a top-flight premiership game after sitting through a grim relegation struggle in the second division. We don’t deserve to be in that company – but neither do Portugal.

I don’t imagine it’ll be long before Man U see the back of Cristiano Ronaldo. Quite apart from the, er, tension in the dressing room, he’ll be loudly booed at every premiership game next season.

There’s food for thought that it’s the Canada-raised, Germany-based player who shone. Is the premiership all that good? Perhaps it is, and that’s why the top teams are so heavy with foreigners? Changed days: it used to be that the most skilful players were disproportionately Scots. Now they’re dud too.

Agree with the post. England was almost comically incompetent throughout their campaign. Unsure, though, about all the praise lavished on Hargreaves: he worked damned hard and exerted loads of energy; but it would be nice if he could pass the ball to a man in the same-coloured shirt. Now, young Lennon, there’s the man . . .

I’m with Andy. I thought the praise of Hargreaves in the UK press was a bit much – but it was a nice counterpart to the unbridled hostility they’d shown him for the previous few years. he’s clearly not that good; he makes up for a lack of skill with a phenomenal work rate, and while that’s valuable, it’s not THAT valuable. That he stood out (positively) on a team of superstars simply by running around and fouling people speaks volumes.
to #1, I think Hargreaves converted not because he’s better than the guys in the Prem, but because he’s the only guy who didn’t grow up in a culture that reinforces this supposed law of nature that Englishman can’t score from the spot. Everyone (but Owen)’s seen the ads with Pearce or Batty, and basically any fan can tell you who’s missed penalties going back to 1990. You could basically see Lampard/Gerrard pussyfoot their penalties – they were desperate simply to hit the target, and not have everyone go ape shit like they did when Beckham skied two penalties in euro 04. It’s in their heads now.
Lennon’s appearance in the T&T and Portugal games totally changed England; they finally had something approaching an attack.

Cheer up, Mick. There is always another one in four years. I know that for a fan of Brazil it’s kinda hypocritical of me to say, but I got my share of pain too…
