Just Lunch

ut that’s not really why I do it (though on a related topic, I’ll buy free-range chickens and eggs in the vague hope that somehow the birds have led better lives).

So…do I think the free-range chickens I buy spend 100% of their time happily running around in the farmyard? No – I’m not so naive. Would I spend twice the price for organic stuff? Probably not, but it depends: there’s no point in being fanatical about it. Have I on occasion paid more for food which was marked organic when it was no different from the cheaper non-organic stuff next to it? Undoubtedly. It can sometimes be a con….but that doesn’t mean it’s always a con.

Organic farming isn’t a leftover from the hippy era – it’s more a leftover from early-mid 20th century fascism, with BUF followers like Jolyon Jenks advocating organic farming – the beginnings of the Soil Association are informed by these principles. It’s a short leap from soil to ‘blood and soil’…

I occasionally buy organic. My wife assures me that the organic Gala apples taste nicer than the standard. I don’t like Gala so I can’t say. I will buy orgaic as an excuse for free range (Chickens, pork) but generally will buy free range (cos I can afford it and it does taste better or because I’m a meat eater but don’t see why we have to be unnecessarily cruel to the food we eat)
As far as fruit and veg is concerned I think it likely that organic will be worse not better. The chemicals and fertilisers allow us to grow more and kill off the pests that used to feed off the food before we got to it. I’m all for GM food. After all, we’ve been modifying our food for all least 10,000 years.

Jeffrey M; there’s a HUGE difference between selectively breeding crops/livestock to enhance certain characteristics, and splicing in genetic material from other organisms.
The same concern should be given to livestock fed an unnatural diet. The whole ‘prion’ issue was a wakeup call.
