Not really an issue? Artists being told what they can and can’t play?

“Artists”? Artistes, surely?
Mick should have died instead of Jim Morrison.
Talented entertainers can be just as unthinking or cynical as anybody else when it comes to politics, even to something that should be as dear to their artist’s heart as freedom of expression.
Unfortunately, a number of excellent writers suffer the same affliction.
One waits to see whether or not “Street Fighting Man” makes the cut. (The Chinese are right to censor “Beast of Burden”, which is a waste of air.)
Didn’t the Stones get roped into one of Jean-Luc Godard’s Maoist propaganda films in the late sixties? These weirdos (http://www.etext.org/Politics/MIM/movies/godard.html ) at least are under the impression Mick and Keef had a Maoist phase.
Ohfercrisake! Censored? Nobody’s forcing them to tour China. It’s just a business; a very lucrative business.
If YOU hired these guys for a private performance you’d be damned sure to tell them EXACTLY what you wanted to hear.
Of course it’s a business, which is why it grates more than a little when they pretend it’s been about anything more for the last 20 years or more.
And hold on, it’s not the audience telling them what they want to hear, it’s the government, so your analogy falls apart immediately. Unless the government brought up all the tickets en masse of course, which means you know something I don’t
