From the Scotsman, “World leaders join to remember Holocaust”:

In Turkey, the foreign ministry said: “We respectfully commemorate the deaths of all people who died in the Holocaust. We hope all humanity will learn the necessary lessons of this horrifying period with no match in history, so that similar events will not be repeated.”

Turkish Sultan Beyazid II let Jews into the Ottoman Empire after their expulsion from Spain in 1492. Turkey also aided Jews fleeing the Holocaust.

“The Jewish academics who took refuge in our country took positions at universities and made important contributions to the education of our children,” the statement said.

The Armenians weren’t quite so fortunate.

Right. But at least the trial against Pamuk was cancelled, so who knows? In a hundred years from now, maybe Turks will fess up…

Just out of interest I found the interview with Ara Sarafian about access to Turkish archives and Professor Justin McCarthy, the authority old Marko relied on, here:

(Sarafian calls McCarthy “a classic partisan denier who makes statements that are patently untrue.” )
