Benghazi Update

Good news for the accused under sentence of death in the Benghazi AIDS case:

Libya’s Supreme Court has overturned death sentences imposed on five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor for infecting children with HIV.
It has also ordered a retrial in a lower court.

The six were sentenced to death by firing squad in May 2004 for infecting 426 children with the HIV virus in the port city of Benghazi.

The nurses and doctor say they are innocent. Bulgaria, the US and the European Union urged their release.

Very good news, I have been following this for some time on my blog. Incidently, when I posted the plight of these individauls on a mailing list of pharmacists (hoping to get some solidarity for fellow health professionals) it was suggested that I was acting as a propagandist for US neo-imperialism. Sigh.

I have seen reactions of three family members of the accused and they are all very negative. And I completely agree with them. Indeed death sentences were canceled, but this was only done to save the damaged face of Gadaffi towards the US and EU.
What happened on 25 December has nothing to do with justice and righteousness. Lybia knows that they are innocent and they know that they have tortured them and they used them as scapegoats from the beginning on in 1999. So when the intention of Lybia was good, they would have sent them home immediately on Christmas day. But what did they do? Sending them to prison again. And do you know wahat the international right (also signed by Lybia!!) says about jailing people of whom you know they are innocent? Yes, a crime.
So I have not the least impression Lybia has seriously improved. And the positive noises of EU and USA are very hypocrite. When the same happened in USA or Europe everyone would be angry with the retrial, so why not now?
Yes the USA and EU have restored the contact with Gadaffi. For EU and USA Gadaffi is important because of oil and Al-Qaeda danger, so they will absolutely permit him a lot in the near future. In the meantime Gadaffi’s only needs to save his face towards another group: the families of the aids victims, who believe his lies and are sure the six are guilty. And because the retrial will be in the city of the aids victims, I have no hope the judge there will release them, it is a too high risk for the judges there. Postponement and postponement is the most likely and knowing that the physical and psychological situation of the six defendants, who got a life science on Christmas day, is terrible, I am afraid they will not survive a stay in prison without end.
And to Bulgaria: Lybia will ask you a high prize for the release of the nurses. If you want to see them back alive in your country you can do nothing else than accept it, otherwise you will never see them back. It is so injustice and so sad, but the six are not prisoners, but hostages. Thinking that a criminal country like Lybia will let them go is an illusion.
