Hot Stuff

Sometimes you can just go too far, and Clive Davis has, regrettably, crossed the line on this occasion: “almost everyone used to chuckle (and quite right too) at Donna Summer“.

Chuckle? Donna Summer? No one chuckled near me, or make no mistake I’d have……well, I’d have been very cross. I thought – still think – that she was wonderful. Great voice, great looks – sexy without needing to push it – two of the all-time disco classics in “I Feel Love” and “Hot Stuff”. I can’t stand idly by while the reputation of a great artist is sullied in this way….

Mick, a Donna fan!!! I’d never have guessed.
I like “Hot Stuff” too, but if you measure her against the great singers of the Motown/Stax era, I don’t think she comes off that well. But leaving aside how good she really was, the point I was really trying to make was that pop/cultural critics of the day never tried to pretend she was anything other than an entertainer, albeit one with a particularly raunchy image. Maybe I missed it, but I don’t think academics built careers on claming she was some huge social force. Yet they do it with Madonna, whose music is even more lightweight. I just don’t get it…

No I wouldn’t want to compare her with some of the greats, as you say, but I thought she was pretty damn good at what she did. I don’t agree with this view that all disco was crap: there was lots of good music, Chic for instance, as well as Donna. And yes, it never claimed to be anything more than what it was – music to make you feel good and dance to.

“I Feel Love” is one of the greatest singles ever, though Mr Moroder perhaps deserves the credit for that. But Donna’s version of Jon&Vangelis “State of Independence” is pretty good too.
    “Chic, for instance”
KC, Shalamar, The Whispers “And The Beat Goes On”, Kool and the Gang, and a host of one or two hit wonders. I could go on …
