Science for Idiots

This guy is a professor of psychology. His speciality? Luck. I’d have thought that luck, like Intelligent Design, is something that by definition is outside the range of science: if you find a reason why one person is luckier than another, then it’s no longer a question of luck.

His latest wheeze? (scroll down)

A scientist is to test the reputation of Skibbereen, Co Cork — widely considered to be the luckiest town in Ireland. Professor Richard Wiseman, of the University of Hertfordshire, will buy 50 lottery tickets in Skibbereen and a further 50 in Dublin, for the draw tomorrow.

Nothing wrong with Richard Wiseman, unless you count a talent for publicity under that heading, and in that department he has nothing on Messrs Galloway and Penn. His work on the supernatural comes as close as anyone ever has done to explaining away the entire phenomenon of “ghosts” – as a function of room size, sound in a particular location, etc. I’d be very surprised if the “Times” report you cite isn’t a travesty of what he’s trying to do in this different field.

You may be right, but it would have to be a fairly major piece of misreporting by the Times before I was convinced there was anything remotely scientific in this.
