The Missing

ring, the pain? Oh yes….that was the whole point. The casualties weren’t an unfortunate side-effect; they were the target. These weren’t attacks on the tube, or on the bus: they were attacks on the people in the tube, on the passengers on the bus. Not even because they were of the wrong race or the wrong nationality, or the wrong class. Not even because they were of the wrong religion. Just because the maximum amount of human suffering in this city at this time serves their purpose.

And they derive their justification from a religion. Really, what can you say? More to the point, what can Muslims say if people sharing their religion have come to this.

Yes… this is the lesson of 9/11 and London. What can you say about a religion where this is tolerated, or ignored, instead of being loudly and persistently condemned? We are in for a long, hard struggle.

Well, yes, it is being tolerated by some and ignored by others within Islam. But it is also being condemned. What can we do to support those condemning it, like the brave Arabic newspaper editor quoted below?
My own view about the religion’s role is that it has made a convenient host for a dengerous parasite. Someone whose politics I do not share has nonetheless pinpointed the cause better than anyone. Taken together with Berman, the incisive Mr. Cohen’s inspiration, their analysis may help us steer a course through this which won’t empower racists who attack people simply because they are Muslims.
