Paxman v Galloway

The BBC give Paxman’s tough handling of Galloway prominence on their website, as one of the highlights of their election coverage: “Mr Galloway, are you proud of having got rid of one of the very few black women in Parliament?” But surely it’s not her colour that made Galloway decide on fighting this particular constituency: it’s the fact that she’s Jewish.

The indefatigable member for Bethnal Green and Bow anti-semitic? I’m shocked.
On the topic of anti-semitism, an ex-work colleague, who was Muslim, was very strict in boyotting Sainsbury’s as “it’s Jewish owned”. Instead he did all his shopping at Tesco.
His anti-semitism I found offensive but I also found something unsettling about his level of ignorance. If people are going to be bigotted at least they should find out what they are bigotted about.

I’m sorry, but I have to ask, why is George Galloway anti-semitic? Or racist, for that matter? Does anyone who beats a Williams sister in WImbledon get asked if they feel guilty for knocking out a poor wee defenceless black woman? Galloway chose Bethnal Green for the ludicrously pragmatic reason that he believed it was winnable. God forbid prospective MPs pick seats on such sublunary grounds. I considered saying something along the lines of “when Labour and the Tories play by the rules. maybe he’ll be in the wrong” but I don’t want MPs to play by the rules. An MP is like a lawyer: I want an amoral devious underhand snake on my side. And the best one won in Bethnal. They chose correctly. So the fox couldn’t reach the grapes: tough.

I don’t think Galloway is necessarily anti-semitic, but his choice of a seat to fight, in my opinion, was influenced by the fact that he could play on the anti-semitism of his Muslim followers.

Mick, have you got any evidence of Galloway “play[ing] on the anti-semitism of his Muslim followers”, or is it just the kind of thing that you think he would do, because he’s the kind of person who would do that kind of thing? Ware circular logic.
