ich, selfish, callous….perfect villains. But as this week’s Private Eye points out, there are a number of problems with this story. The same report, from the Mirror, reveals that the experts were themselves unsure:

During the seven-week trial the Gays vehemently denied they had done anything to harm Christian. Experts could not agree about how the toddler sustained the head injury from which he died, despite the wealth of medical evidence.

Home Office pathologist Professor Helen Whitwell said the brain damage could have been caused by an impact, or forceful gripping.

Prof Whitwell insisted there was “nothing specific” to indicate the problem had been caused by too much salt and there was no evidence of a weapon being used.

Consultant paediatrician Dr Timothy Chambers said it was not safe to conclude definitively that Christian’s high blood-sodium levels were caused by ingesting salt. But he agreed with prosecutor Julia Macur QC that there was “virtually no other reason” to explain it.

There’s a history of women being accused of deliberately overdosing their children with salt. The man behind these stories?….discredited Professor Sir Roy Meadow, of “Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy” fame, whose evidence helped convict innocent mothers such as Angela Canning, Sally Clark, and Trupti Patel of murdering their babies.

The Gays were originally charged with murder, but it emerged at the trial that Christian’s bruising was too recent, and must have occurred while he was in hospital, so the shaking/beating allegation collapsed. It also emerged that Christian had suffered two episodes of heart damage, the larger one certainly before he was in the care of the Gays.

So the default option for the prosecution, in line with Sir Roy Meadow’s dubious precedent, was to opt for deliberate salt poisoning. Christian had a sodium chloride level of well above normal on admission to hospital, though not necessarily a fatal level. But how do you administer teaspoons full of salt to a toddler without force? And why? Why on earth salt? Not, you would think, a common method of punishing children, outside of the fantasies of Sir Roy Meadow.

As the Eye point out: “Probably the most troubling aspect of the case, which points to Christian having died from natural causes, is that high levels of salt were not being excreted by his kidneys, as might have been expected.” If he was being deliberately poisoned, his kidneys – which appeared healthy – should have been working hard getting rid of that salt.

A few web sites have reported on this case, as an example of how nasty people can be. “Evil fuckers” just about covers the general attitude. Maybe they’re looking in the wrong direction for the “evil fuckers”.

Why have you just typed up other articles eg Private Eye? Vanity website.

Have you read the Private Eye article? Compared it with this post? No, I didn’t think so. The only bit “typed out” from the Eye is where I say, “As the Eye point out…”

“Why on earth salt? Not, you would think, a common method of punishing children…”
No, you wouldn’t think so, but it is, unfortunately, extremely common. I have no idea about the guilt or otherwise of the Gays but simply casting doubt on evidence because some of it is based on research carred out by Professor Meadow is merely to be swept along by the hysterical and ill-informed media witch-hunt of a man who has saved probably more children in this country than all other paediatricians together. Incidentally, in the case of Petrina Stocker, the Romford mother jailed on February 25 for killing her nine-year-old son by putting salt in his hospital drip, I thought it was interesting that almost none of the British newspapers could bring themselves to use the word “Munchausen’s” in reference to the case, event though this was a classic example of the syndrome named (but not, as is nearly always said, invented) by Meadow and was described as such in courts. The agencies carried the reference but it was somehow subbed out by the time the news filtered through to the readers. The American and other foreign press had no problem using it, but then they aren’t worried about undermining the apparent veracity of a story by using a word they have done their ill-informed best to discredit in the eyes of their readers. As I said, hysteria.

“… research carred out by Professor Meadow…”
Meadow didn’t do any research. None exists. There’s just his 1977 Lancet paper, in which he describes how he force-fed salt to a toddler (who already had high sodium levels) to see what would happen. 30 grams – weigh it out and see how many teaspoons that comes to.
The toddler died, and Meadow accused the mother of killing the child by force-feeding salt… odd that. This is the “research” on which Meadow based his Munchausen’s Syndrome by Proxy theory.

Professor Meadow has probably killed more children than all the country’s child-killers put together. “SIDS doesn’t run in families,” he claimed, thus putting back research into cot deaths by years. He accused parents of child abuse when their babies had seizures or died from Cisapride; that delayed the identification of this harmful drug and its subsequent withdrawal from paediatric use, resulting in unnecessary deaths over years.
As for the blatant acts of perjury he has committed in the courts… an eleven month old can’t pick up and choke on a button, according to his testimony (evey parent and child healthcare-worker knows this is rubbish). He’d never heard of the Modified Glasgow Coma Scale, according to his testimony in the Family Court (he was using it in his own paediatric ward!)
Roy Meadow has made himself a millionaire out of his baseless opinions, getting paid thousands for each case – over £8000 to stitch up Angela Cannings, for example. There’s no media hysteria over him – if anything the media have held back in calling him what he really is: The man is a liar and a fraud and a perpetrator of abuse against countless families and children.
