Private Eye outdoes itself today. The cover has a picture of Bush, under the heading “Bush Re-elected”, saying……wait for it…….”Four Moron Years!”
Yep, cutting-edge humour at its best.
Inside in the Hackwatch section they have a go at Mark Steyn, a pet hate figure, because of his regularly stated belief that Osama Bin Laden was dead. Not a particularly unusual position to hold, as it happens. Maybe they don’t like him because he’s consistently sharp and funny, unlike the Eye nowadays.
Yep, establishment humour at its smuggest.
I’ll start by stating I’m a long-term subscriber to Private Eye, from the “Maxwell” days.
To be fair, the Eye mocks Kerry just as much inside (“John Kerry’s eBay shows Items I’m Selling – One pair of flip-flops”, etc.). The “moron” bit is an in-joke that comes from the continued reference by “Reverend Blair” to “Reverend Bush of the Church of Latter-day Morons”.
You just have to know … trust me.
The Mark Steyn article is weak, when it comes to flogging dead horses none compares to the sadly departed Paul Foot and his “In The Back” team; still insistant that Libya had nothing to do with the Pam-Am bomb, that Hanratty was innocent (despite conclusive DNA tests) and that MMR causes Autism.
However, the Steyn article is consistant with all other “Hackwatch” articles, you really have to take them all into account.
