Surely one of the 20th century greats. Took the passion and soul of black gospel and added low-down-and-dirty lyrics….whew! “What’d I Say”, “I Got A Woman”, “It Should’ve Been Me”, “Lonely Avenue”…. And that’s just one side of the man.
A comment at LGF (where, perhaps unsurprisingly, their fondest memory is of his version of “God Bless America”) – “he was an incredible voice, a great pianist, but really lousy at watching TV.” Hmm, I’m really not sure what to make of that……
