  • Legally illiterate

wyers who practise in this area and all say the law badly needs clarification. The Equality and Human Rights Commission agrees. Spelling out that sex in the Equality Act means biological sex would make the law on single-sex spaces, services and sports much clearer, and so help organisations fulfil their rights and responsibilities to women. It would in no way undermine the act’s important but separate protections against discrimination for trans people under gender reassignment.

There is so much to criticise the Conservatives for on women’s rights and provision, but on this they are right, though they should have prioritised doing it before an election. So why the frenzied anger about Badenoch’s proposals? It is the symptom of a mindset often found in those who spend too much time online, which rots their critical faculties and drives them to see the world as a cartoonish set of heroes and villains. To them, Badenoch is hateful and so anything she says must be wrong. It doesn’t help that there are many men, including on the left, who feel little empathy for women who don’t want to be forced to undress or talk about their trauma in front of, or receive intimate care from, anyone male, regardless of how they identify. I also suspect that the heightened irrationality on display is a product of the different standards that black women are held to, whether they have the politics of Badenoch or Diane Abbott.

The polite way to describe the Labour response to Badenoch’s proposal is “legally illiterate”. The party claims that the law in this area is clear, despite the fact it is so unclear that, as the result of a judicial review that has made its way through the Scottish courts, in the next year or so the supreme court will have to try to interpret what parliament meant by “sex” in the Equality Act. Labour will argue that the problem can be fixed through statutory guidance, which is nonsense: guidance cannot change the law; only parliament can. As one lawyer I spoke to said, Labour’s position is to uphold the problematic status quo. If it goes ahead with its plans to make a GRC easier to get without first clarifying the law, it will make things worse.

But in a world where few journalists understand the laws and there is no shortage of people willing to express a zealous view based on vibes instead of knowledge, Labour has got away with it. Why expend political capital on solving a real and important issue when you’ve got pundits who will happily denounce it as the invention of an evil witch called Badenoch? It’s a win-win situation: the said pundits get the thrill of fomenting their culture wars, even as they performatively call them out; Labour frontbenchers escape accountability for their hapless fudge. It’s only the female survivors of rape and abuse who can’t access single-sex services who lose out.

  • Springtime for the Tories

Amusing letter from Andrew Lloyd Webber in today's Sunday Times:

Have any political pundits considered the following scenario (offered with apologies to Mel Brooks and The Producers)? A prime minister wishes to lose an election to pursue a far more lucrative career elsewhere. The PM contrives an unelectable case for his or her party; MPs refuse to stand in droves; a dreadful campaign ensues; a totally unacceptable manifesto is announced. But just as a triumphant disaster is inevitable, the electorate warms to the appalling scenario. A landslide victory follows, with the prime minister lamenting: “Where did we go right?”

The Normandy D-Day farrago would certainly support the idea that Sunak wants out, and will go to any lengths to ensure failure. On the other hand – toxic Keir Starmer…

  • Stonewalling at Exeter

    wn pronouns where appropriate.

    How unutterably depressing.

But last night academics at Exeter – a member of the prestigious Russell Group of leading universities – criticised the document as a tool to crush dissent against gender ideology.

Dr Edward Skidelsky, a philosophy lecturer, said: “Schemes like this are coercive and intended to put pressure on people who are gender-critical.

“You will be made visible if you sign up because a badge will be displayed on your staff profile. So if you don’t sign it can be easily identified and mean you will possibly targeted by student activists.

“Also gender-critical people will want to be free to be able to refer to trans people by their biological sex in certain cases. If someone is a rapist then it is ridiculous that you should say ‘she’."…

Another Exeter academic, who asked not to be named for fear of being disciplined or fired, said: “I just hope that no one notices me abstaining from such things.

“If I am noticed, someone will complain about me and the university will try to sack me. Even if they don’t succeed, the process will be brutal – the disciplinary process is itself a brutal punishment.

“It’s a tyranny, with no concept that those with dissenting views should be tolerated.”

It's no surprise I suppose that universities are the last bastions of this particular sugar-coated tyranny.

  • Four hostages rescued

    Excellent news:

It has been cleared for publication that in a complex operation by the IDF, Shin Bet, and the Israel Police (Yamam), four Israeli hostages were rescued this morning (Saturday). The hostages, Noa Argamani (25), Almog Meir (21), Andrey Kozlov (27), and Shlomi Ziv (40), were kidnapped by Hamas to the Gaza Strip from the 'Nova' party on October 7th.

The hostages were rescued by Shin Bet and Yamam fighters from two different locations in an operation in the heart of Nuseirat.

Their medical condition is stable, and they have been transferred for further medical examinations at the 'Sheba' Medical Center in Tel HaShomer.

Many, myself included, believed that any remaining hostages would be dead by now. Not so!

A Times of Israel report from April:

It’s the last wish of a dying mother, to be with her daughter once more. But six months into Israel’s war against Hamas, time is running out for Liora Argamani, who hopes to stay alive long enough to see her kidnapped daughter come home.

“I want to see her one more time. Talk to her one more time,” said Argamani, 61, who has stage four brain cancer. “I don’t have a lot of time left in this world.”

    Her wish finally granted.

  • The mob at Durham

le=”font-size: 11pt”>Dr Shahid Mahmoud, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at Durham University, was reportedly behind the event’s cancellation.

Ha. Inclusion doesn't extend to Jews.

The debate would have featured a number of experts including Natasha Hausdorff of UK Lawyers for Israel; investigative journalist David Collier and Lance Forman, a former Brexit Party Member of European Parliament. The pro-Palestinian side of the debate would have been represented by Chris Doyle, the director of the council for Arab-British Understanding; Dr Peter Shambrook, a specialist Middle Eastern historian and Mohab Ramadan a Durham University undergraduate.

Forman wrote on X that "I’m in Durham tonight to debate “Palestinian Leadership is the biggest barrier to peace” Only the University just caved in to a fascist mob and cancelled the debate at last minute. Free speech died in Durham tonight! They’re afraid of hearing the truth"….

Hausdorff told the Telegraph that students attending the debate were locked inside by a “mob” of pro-Palestinian protesters, who formed a human chain around the building.

The Durham Students for Palestine group condemned the choice of speakers, and accused the university of allowing the Union to become “a Zionist mouthpiece.”

They appear not to understand the concept of "debate".

The tab reported the "mob" barricaded the doors in front of the building to prevent members and speakers from entering and leaving and claimed that those inside were trapped for an hour and 45 minutes.

The protesters also reportedly banged on the windows of the building, while shouting “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.”

Hausdorff told The Telegraph: “Around a dozen students were preparing the chamber for the debate then a mob formed a human chain blocking them inside.

“They were stuck inside the debate chamber for more than two and a half hours. The police took no action because the university refused to give them a mandate to take action.”

“Students were in tears because they expected the university to have their back, but they sided with the mob.

“My heart goes out to all the students affected. It’s shameful, we’ve been told it’s the diversity official.”Students are said to have been escorted out of the premises, after several hours of being trapped, by police. UK Lawyers for Israel posted on social media: “Durham University shut down free speech today at the Durham Union Society, home of free speech since 1842.

“Hundreds of students hoped to attend, but the uni caved into a mob chanting for genocide.”

    Yep.

  • “Problematic language”

“font-size: 11pt”>The listing of “born male” or “genetically male” under terms to avoid in Paris – along with a blanket guideline to replace “identifies as” with “is” – has sparked outrage among many ex-Olympians. Inga Thompson, a cyclist who represented the US at three Olympics, said: “The IOC media have allowed themselves to be bought, because deep down, they never wanted women to be in sports. The ultimate misogynist movement.”

Alison Sydor, who competed for Canada in mountain biking at Atlanta 1996, pointed out that the IOC had cited GLAAD, an American LGBT advocacy group, as a leading authority on the subject. Only this week, GLAAD promoted a T-shirt bearing the message: “No TERFs (trans-exclusionary radical feminists).” “The IOC sure know how to pick a partner to lecture everyone about dehumanising language,” Sydor wrote.

Sharron Davies, the British swimming champion who took silver in Moscow in 1980, retweeted a post from Cathy Devine, a former lecturer in sport and physical activity at the University of Cumbria, branding the IOC’s document “breathtakingly sexist and complete propaganda”. Despite the backlash, Yiannis Exarchos, chief executive of Olympic Broadcasting Services, promised that his team in Paris would use the guidelines as “our Bible”.

    This is not looking good….

  • Rooting out anti-socialist and non-socialist phenomena

More from the Daily NK on the crackdown on "impure videos" from South Korea, with reports of inspectors breaking down doors to check what people are watching:

Crackdowns and inspections targeting the consumption or distribution of foreign content, including South Korean movies and dramas, have suddenly intensified in North Hamgyong Province after a period of inactivity.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a Daily NK source in North Hamgyong Province said Monday that members of an enforcement group tasked with curbing non-socialist behavior “have recently been inspecting homes in Hoeryong’s neighborhood watch units to determine if they are watching impure videos.” He said people are inconvenienced “because the inspectors barge in unannounced twice or thrice a day.”

He continued, “Public discontent is especially growing because the inspectors break down your door if nobody opens it right away when they knock or act as if you’ve committed some sort of felony.”

The source said the intensified inspection campaign is due to an order from the national headquarters of the so-called unified command on non-socialist and anti-socialist behavior issued in mid-May to “Unified Command 82” branches nationwide instructing them to “root out anti-socialist and non-socialist phenomena, especially the watching of impure videos.”
