ho constitute the American feminist establishment today are destined to play little role in the battle for Muslim women’s rights. Preoccupied with their own imagined oppression, they can be of little help to others–especially family-centered Islamic feminists. The Katha Pollitts and Eve Enslers, the vagina warriors and university gender theorists–these are women who cannot distinguish between free and unfree societies, between the Taliban and the Promise Keepers, between being forced to wear a veil and being socially pressured to be slender and fit. Their moral obtuseness leads many of them to regard helping Muslim women as “colonialist” or as part of a “hegemonic” “civilizing mission.” It disqualifies them as participants in this moral fight.

I suppose it is a question too sensitive to investigate, but how much of political change in the West during, say, the last five decades, has been driven by women who are insane?

I gave up on the US women’s movement a long time ago. They are a bunch of upper/middle class ladies who don’t relate – in many ways more than you pointed out. They have no clue what it’s like to try to just feed, shelter and get health care for the poor – particularly mothers, infants and children. And you may think that female mutilation is an issue (which it is), but my bet is it’s secondary to other issues facing some of these women. I wouldn’t call the feminists insane, just ignorant.

Every time I read something like this I remember Evan Sayet’s speech to the Heritage Foundation, exactly what he says, that “Modern Liberals” argue only to bring equivilence, and therefore dispense with the need to make moral judgement.
The old canard of “banning abortion” often becomes associated with religion, however, I’d challenge anyone to educate themselves on third-trimester abortion techniques and then try and justify why it should be done for no reason other than the woman’s “choice”.
