Idiot Wind

What makes the new translation of the Bible especially wonderful is its sheer ham-fistedness. And yet here‘s Williams the Archbishop idiotically singing its praises. This has already been well covered by Oliver Kamm, Peter Cuthbertson and Laban Tall, but I can’t resist adding my own favourite:

The translation is pioneering in its accessibility, and changes the original Greek and Hebrew nomenclature into modern nicknames. St. Peter becomes “Rocky,” Mary Magdalene becomes “Maggie,” Aaron becomes “Ron,” Andronicus becomes “Andy” and Barabbas becomes “Barry.”

Are they sure this isn’t a joke?

It is hard to believe that it’s not a joke – This Is Bible Tap perhaps. It sounds like a parody of how middle-class lefties dumb things down in the name of “accessibility”, which is usually just code for a snobbish assumption that the poor Sun-reading proles can’t understand anything complicated.
But what this really shows is how little confidence the church has in its own beliefs. They are so desperate to be popular that they are willing to strip their own holy book of any grandeur or literary value and re-write St Paul to drop his unfashionable attitudes to sexuality down a memory hole. It’s utterly pathetic, and shows that the CofE establishment no longer believes in Christianity in any serious way. It is also self-defeating, because the more apologetic the church becomes about (what used to be) its values the less likely it is to convince anybody to follow them.
