Historian Paul Fussell in the Guardian (via ALDaily):
Fussell was vigorously opposed to last year’s invasion of Iraq: “If you don’t get angry about this war you don’t deserve to be alive.”
Well, that’s telling us.

I was in favour of the war, but feel able to forgive Paul Fussell his comment. For one thing, it was made in the context of an article about his experience of war – frontline, low-tech, infantry grunt level, which I am eternally grateful not to have had to undergo myself. For another, he’s written the best book, perhaps the only decent book apart from Richard Bradford’s, on Kingsley Amis, which opened my eyes to the man behind the cartoon buffer, again to my lasting benefit.
Fussell’s written at length about ‘his’ war, 41-45, and an Amazon search will find them for anyone interested – his books come recommended by me at any rate, especially “the Great War and Modern Memory” if I’ve remembered the title correctly.
Like many of Mick’s readers, though, I did get angry about the war, just not in the way Paul F imagines.
