Many people in the West affect to care about Tibet, precisely because they know they’ll never have to do anything about it. But if, say, George Bush picked up the Tibetan cause and played hardball with China about it, they’d abandon it completely. Michael Moore would show film clips of smiling children playing soccer with PLA soldiers etc…
Gandhi-style non-violent action may have stood no chance against China, where there’s no free press. But it could have worked in Palestine. A well-planned campaign of civil disobedience and publicity stunts could have reduced US financial and military support for Likud, and opened up divisions in Israeli society. The willingness of ordinary Israelis to pay the price of occupation might have waned. Instead, the strategy of sending teenagers to self-detonate in pizza restaurants has produced no tangible results for the Palestinians. They’ve attracted a rather unsavoury supporters club, but that’s it.
