Dissidents of Islam

More on the Ayaan Hirsi Ali controversy, and accusations of “enlightenment fundamentalism” (via b&w):

Ayaan Hirsi Ali positioned herself explicitly in the tradition of eastern European dissidents who turned away from communism in favour of Western freedom. “The dissidents of Islamism, like those of communism, possess neither atomic bombs nor other weapons. We don’t set embassies and flags on fire. We are too few and too dispersed to become anything significant as a collective. The only thing we have are our thoughts and the only thing we demand is the chance to express ourselves freely. Our opponents want to use violence to silence us. They claim that we are spiritually and mentally unreliable and shouldn’t be taken seriously. Communism’s defenders used the same methods.”

The sympathetic reading of Islam recalls that of communism before 1989. At the time, the West’s self-hatred and invalidation of the accomplishments of free democracy were expressed in a generous interpretation of communism. A similar phenomenon is to be seen in attitudes towards Islam today, in large part thanks to its anti-capitalism and anti-Americanism. Many Western intellectuals had reservations about eastern European dissidents because they were only fighting for the so-called “bourgeois liberties.” Many dreamed at the time of a “third way” between capitalism and communism. The analogy is evident in the terminology: Stalinism could be criticised but communism was handled with kid gloves. Today, criticism of Islamism is common sense, but criticism of Islam has to be conducted with care.

ing but obvious the two are related, a fact the self-haters spend all their time trying to ignore or invalidate, by finding examples of “socialist liberalism” within alternatives.
By showing that an alternative is possible, be it in communism or Islam, will further their gains, but they have little chance, history shows how liberal socialism emerged from western Christianity with its core values intact, it is ironic that the same basic values that self-hating liberal socialists adhere to are shared by modern Christian politics, yet they reject it at every opportunity.
There is a reason why nurses are called “sister”, the early “healthcare for all” was run by the Nuns.
There is a reason why the british sign language gesture for “social worker” mimics the stole of a Priest, because they were the social workers of their day doing the same job.
What the liberal socialist wants for everyone is what the Christian church was trying to achieve 100 years ago.
Ayaan Hirsi Ali is an apostate in their eyes, rather than trying to subvert the culture she grew up in, as self-haters have done to western Christianity, she has abandoned it and jumped ship to our ready made one.
The reason she did this is, as she admits, you can’t change the culture she left.

The article refers to “finding a third way”, and Ramadan (among others) uses this phrase often. When did this happen? In what sense is Islam one of the world’s ways? After all, no one wants to steer a course between, say, capitalism and Christianity.

Geert Wilders has Islam exactly right: “Islam itself is the problem. Islam is a violent religion. The Prophet Mohammed was a violent man. The Koran is mostly a violent book. We should invest in Muslim people but they have to first get rid of half the Koran and half of their beliefs”

Like that is going to happen. As with Communism, there is no real third way. Removing the violence and intolerance from Islam would eviscerate it.

To hit Islam where it hurts, you have to go for its founder, as sooner or later we shall have to. The whole edifice rests entirely on his unsupported word. That is why Muslims are so defensive when Mohammad is criticised, or even worse, satirised. It is also why most Muslims are incoherent, they are told they have to revere as a life example someone who committed murder, theft, enslavement and took a child bride.
